The Future of Auditing

November 8, 2006

in Big Sky View

The six largest international accounting and auditing organizations (BDO International, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton International, KPMG & Pricewaterhousecoopers) have just published a report on the future of auditing.  The report entitled “Global Capital Markets and the Global Economy: A Vision From the CEOs of the International Audit Networks” addresses a number of key issues and outlines a number of important recommendations and innovative ideas for moving the global financial and business reporting environment into a new era.  It’s important, complicated stuff and the firms recognize that they are covering issues that need debate and discussion amongst a wide community of interested parties – and indeed the report has received coverage in the WSJ, NY and London Times etc.

So imagining that the firms would be making a big deal of this and actively looking to illustrate and facilitate discussion about how to migrate to this exciting new world of real time, dynamic information I trundled off to each of the firms websites to see what was going on.

And here’s what I found.

Of the six firms – only Deloitte has got round to posting the report and issuing a press release.

What a shame that in trying to break new ground the firms an missed opportunity to create an online community for interested stakeholders to actively debate and discuss the issues.  Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised and something will appear in the next few days – but it seems all too likely that the active debate that the firms are hoping for will occur out of sight in isolated discussions in private meeting rooms and offices around the world.

Where’s the transparency in the search for business reporting transparency??
