Innovation Agnostics

Bruce MacEwen, the brains behind the most excellent law firm blog Adam Smith Esq, makes a number of critical points about innovation (in the context of law firms, but applicable to other professional services firms and beyond). He highlights the need for lots of small ideas rather than “Big” ideas and the importance of failing early and often.

One comment that particularly struck me was:

“Successful innovation…. is for agnostics. Admit that you don’t know in advance what will work”

It’s tough for firms full of “experts” to grapple with the unknown and to contemplate failure – but if you think of it as experimentation and as a quest for new knowledge and insight, the innovation journey becomes a lot more intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding.

Inquiring minds need to know!
