Stefan Lindegaard of INTRAP has an interesting post summarizing some of the conclusions from a recent workshop he held with David Maister which focused on innovation in Professional Services Firms.
Lots of good points on both the need for innovation and the process/culture for innovation – several of which I touched on in an earlier post.
Professional Services – especially accounting and law – are generally seeing unprecedented levels of demand in the face of significant talent supply issues (retiring boomers, and Gen-Yers looking for better work-life balance). In that context the focus for innovation should be on:
- Finding new ways to attract and retain talent – by finding different career path, work patterns and compensation models
- Being more productive through better ways of working (not longer working)
- Pricing work based on its value not on the hours worked
Break the “billable hours” model and the innovation floodgates will open.
I shall be meeting Stefan in New York on Monday so I look forward to continuing the discussion.
